Velvet

This TV series is pure gold. Velvet is a high-end fashion store in Madrid, Spain. It explores not only haute couture in the 1950s but relationships, social classes, money, entanglements and love.

The series introduces us immediately to the main love interest between Alberto Márquez, son of the owner of Velvet, and Ana Ribera, a humble seamstress and the niece of the store’s manager. We soon learn about their childhood romance and how Alberto’s sudden departure to London (where he spent the last seven years) only intensified their love.

This is the perfect series for many ages, as it’s one of the more appropriate TV shows on Netflix. I often recommend this to students, as this is something that I could show in the classroom. You can watch it with either Spanish or English subtitles, so it’s perfect for all levels of Spanish for high school students
