Written by the famous Isabel Allende, this book dives into what being a woman entails. As someone who doesn’t always enjoy strong feminist novels, I did not know if I would like this book. But, as someone who loves Isabel Allende’s work, I decided to give it a try. And I was pleasantly surprised! Yes, the book does celebrate women, but it also gives its readers a new perspective of what women offer society, regardless of the injustices they may face. This resonated with me, because Isabel Allende has lived through unequal treatment as a reporter in Latin America during the 1950’s and ‘60s, where females were seen as subordinates in all ways. They were seen as victims of the time; they didn’t have a voice. They were not expected, in fact, to have a voice or an opinion. It was a man’s world then, but the book makes us ask the difficult question: has it really changed all that much?
This is fairly fast read, as it’s only 190 pages.
For a Spanish student, I have recommended it to advanced Spanish 4 students, and they were able to get through it without any problems. However, if you are unsure, it is the perfect recommendation for students at the end of Spanish 4.
While the book is originally written in Spanish, it is also available in English.
